Sustainable Development Leadership Award

The Sustainable Development Leadership Award was instituted by TERI in 2005 to felicitate the efforts of global leaders in the field of sustainable development.

HE Ms Tarja Halonen, President of Finland was conferred the Sustainable Development Leadership Award by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh. In her acceptance speech, she highlighted the crucial linkages between sustainable development, human resources development, and the empowerment of women.

The Sustainable Development Leadership Award for the year 2011 was conferred to the Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh for his continued commitment to sustainable development. Dr Singh was chosen by a panel of eminent leaders including HE Mr Hamid Karzai, President, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan; HE Dr Leonel Fernández, President, the Dominican Republic; HE Mr James Alix Michel, President, Seychelles; Dr Farooq Abdullah, Minister of New and Renewable Energy, GoI; and Dr R K Pachauri, Director-General, TERI.

Dr Manmohan Singh: Leading India on the path of sustainable development

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, was awarded the Sustainable Development Leadership Award in 2011 for taking measures to steer India towards a sustainable future. In 2005 he brokered a landmark nuclear deal with the USA, setting India on the path of low carbon development. In the same year he launched the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), a landmark employment guarantee scheme, which also gives jobs to people as they build water harvesting structures and conserve forests in India’s countryside. In 2008 he launched the National Action Plan for Climate Change (NAPCC), an ambitious plan to counter climate change in India.
